On September 7, 2017, an 8.2 earthquake struck the States of Oxacana and Chipas in Mexico.
The most powerful earthquake in thirty years, it was followed by two secondary tremors in the south of the country on 19 and 23 September, causing the death of 500 people and leaving thousands of residents homeless.
Particularly vulnerable to seismic phenomena, Mexico is located at only 60 km above one of the Pacific Ocean microplates. In 1985, an earthquake which was similar to the one on 7 September killed over 10,000.
