Idai Emergency

David Brunet

On March 14, 2019, the Cyclone Idai struck Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

According to official figures, nearly three million people were affected by the natural disaster, including nearly 500 deaths on the east coast of southern Africa.

Thousands of buildings – houses, schools, health centres and hospitals – have been damaged or destroyed, as have the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people.

Many families are left homeless and most communities do not have safe access to reliable source of drinking water or electricity.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
Present in these 3 countries, MSF is doing its absolute best to guarantee the medical care and emergency distributions needed by the victims.

5 days after the disaster, the populations are in dire need of everything and the risk of flooding persists, raising fears of the spread of epidemics such as the cholera, which has contaminated more than 1000 people to date.

The scale of the needs is immense and will require an intensified response from MSF in the coming weeks.
