Bloom, or how to protect the ocean and its treasures

Bloom means to blossom, to flourish. It recalls spring and the return of life after the sleep of winter. In the ocean, the “bloom” corresponds to the moment when the plankton develops very quickly and shapes into the first level of the food chain. A crucial step in maintaining life within this precious ecosystem. Yes, the ocean, source of life on earth, is the source of more than half of the oxygen breathed by humans, even more than the Amazonian forest. Thus are we dependent on phytoplankton – these tiny plants, invisible to the naked eye, which are suspended on the surface of the water.

These living organisms are therefore essential to our life on Earth, and as such we must preserve them and let them “Bloom”. This virtuous cycle can however be unbalanced by human activities, pollution, overfishing, etc. Massive algae hubs appear, most often toxic, which can cover gigantic surfaces of the ocean and cause asphyxiation of marine ecosystems or incite the proliferation of jellyfish.

BLOOM is an association which, since 2005, has made the strategic choice to protect the marine environment and preserve its resilience. This requires the fight against destructive fishing methods and the expansion of fishing pressure in the world. By promoting artisanal fishing, BLOOM promotes methods that are gentle on the environment and highly job-creating.

BLOOM intervenes at several levels: in the field of scientific research, by founding its own independent research programs; in the field of education, by carrying out awareness-raising and scientific mediation actions with the general public; and finally in the legislative field, by taking part in citizen advocacy actions and public consultations on institutional processes.

All these actions are carried out simultaneously in order to enable the phytoplankton to live for many more springs, and thus work for us and for generations to come.
